For some economists, the Friedman rule is mainly a benchmark for thinking clearly about the assumptions underlying our models and a systematic guide for deciding how to modify our models, that is, a way of making scientific progress. however, it is not an exaggeration to say that most of the work in the field of monetary theory has focused on identifying situations in which Friedman’s insight does not apply. in this article, Daniel Sanches discusses the Friedman rule and the main arguments that have been made against it.

The Optimum Quantity of Money Revisited: Distortionary Taxation in a Search Model of Money

This paper incorporates a distortionary tax into a microfoundations of money framework and revisits the optimum quantity of money. The money constraint in the decentralized market plays a key role in the optimal policy. Only if the constraint is binding can fiscal policy alter the agents’ surplus shares; monetary, but not fiscal, policy affects the agents’ bargaining position, leaving a special...

The Optimum Quantity of Debt : Technical Appendix

We describe the numerical method used to compute equilibria in the economies studied by Aiyagari and McGrattan, The Optimum Quantity of Debt (Journal of Monetary Economics 1998). These economies have a large number of infinitely lived households whose saving behavior is influenced by precautionary saving motives and borrowing constraints. We apply the finite element method to compute households...

On the Micro-foundations of Money: The Capitol Hill Baby-Sitting Co-op∗

This paper contributes to the micro-foundation of money in centralized markets with idiosyncratic uncertainty. It shows existence of stationary monetary equilibria and ensures that there is an optimum quantity of money. The rational solution of our model is compared with actual behavior in a laboratory experiment. The experiment gives support to the theoretical approach. JEL classification: C73...

Inventory Model for Non – Instantaneous Deteriorating Items, Stock Dependent Demand, Partial Backlogging, and Inflation over a Finite Time Horizon

In the present study, the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) model of two-warehouse deals with non-instantaneous deteriorating items, the demand rate considered as stock dependent and model affected by inflation under the pattern of time value of money over a finite planning horizon. Shortages are allowed and partially backordered depending on the waiting time for the next replenishment. The main ob...

The Great Capitol Hill Baby Sitting Co-op: Anecdote or Evidence for the Optimum Quantity of Money?∗

This paper studies a centralized market with idiosyncratic uncertainty and money as a medium of exchange from a theoretical as well as an experimental perspective. In our model, prices are fixed and markets are cleared by rationing. We prove the existence of stationary monetary equilibria and of an optimum quantity of money. The rational solution of our model, which is based on the assumption o...
